Romania - Moldavia
de Guide Lonely PlanetThe following itinerary samples from our latest
Romania & Moldova guide will have you on roads well and truly less
travelled in Moldova and wondering whether you're up for the Romanian
World Heritage challenge:
Moldova: Europe's Cousin Once Removed
With fewer than 20,000 foreign tourists each year, just visiting Moldova
will put you truly off the beaten track. Chişinău is conveniently located
in the middle of Moldova, making it easy to use as a base for interesting
day trips...
Romania's Unesco Heritage Sites
For all you Unesco fetishists out there, here is a demanding tour of
Romania and its seven World Heritage sites. This will take you around the
country in a roughly anticlockwise direction, but you'll need at least 20
days to cover some 2500km in your own transportation. From Bucharest, go
to Tulcea and from there explore the fantastic canals of the Danube Delta
(site No 1). Travel north via Galaţi to Suceava, the gateway to the
unforgettable painted monasteries (No 2) near Târgu Neamţ in Southern
Bucovina. After scraping your jaw from the ground, continue west to
Surdeşti, in Maramureş, for its famous wooden churches (No 3). Treat
yourself with a few days in one of the region's villages where time seems
to have stopped a century ago. Venture into Transylvania next. First stop
is Sighişoara to wander around its historic citadel (No 4), then to the
nearby Biertan Saxon fortified church (No 5). Others are close by - check
them out too. Next are the Dacian fortresses near Hunedoara (No 6). You
can hike in the mountains of the Retezat National Park before arriving at
the riveting monastery of Horezu (No 7), where you can give thanks for
having the energy to complete the trip.
Other suggested itineraries in Romania & Moldova include: Sharp Fangs &
Mountain Peaks, and Take the Kids Along.
Enjoy picturesque castles in Dracula's homeland, breathtaking vistas in
the Carpathian mountains, dynamic nightlife in stylish Bucharest and
sun-drenched coastal resorts on the Black Sea. Get under the skin of
Romania and Moldova with our compelling guide, the only one to cover both
countries.
- HIT THE SLOPES, take to the air or head underground with our
dedicated Activities chapter
- EXPLORE Eastern Europe's 'final frontier' of unspoiled countryside
and pristine landscapes with the help of enticing highlights and
itineraries
- EAT, DRINK & BE MERRY - advice on where to find the best bars and
bistros to taste Mămăligă and sample Ţuica
- TALK THE TALK with our practical, comprehensive language chapter
